How I Lost Weight by Practicing What I Preach

My own story of using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy for weight loss
When I first started practising hypnotherapy over three years ago, I noticed something interesting: many of my clients were coming to me for help with weight loss. I hadn’t marketed myself specifically for this — yet, session after session, I found myself working with clients on healthy habits, motivation, and creating lasting change around eating and lifestyle.
The results were inspiring. My clients were losing weight, gaining confidence, and living more energetic lives. But there was one question I couldn’t ignore:
Why wasn’t I seeing those same results in myself?
Understanding the Difference: My Clients vs. Me
I loved working with weight loss clients. With each person, we worked on one change at a time — one small, achievable shift that their brain could take on and turn into lasting progress. But when it came to my own life, I was juggling six or seven goals at once, not all of them meaningful to me. My mind was cluttered, unfocused, and frankly, a bit overwhelmed.
In hypnotherapy, especially Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we work with the brain — not against it. That means doing one thing well, creating positive reinforcement, and building on that success.
I realised, if I wanted to experience the same changes I help others achieve, I needed to treat myself the same way I treat my clients — as an individual with clear goals and a focused plan.
The Turning Point
Five months ago, I had a break in weight loss client work and decided to use that time to focus fully on my own health. I’d reached an age where ignoring the signs — back pain, low energy, breathlessness — wasn’t an option anymore.
I went back to the foundations of my practice. I set one goal. I used my tools. I stayed consistent.
And the results?
Weight lost: 3 stone 2 lbs (20kg)
Back pain: All but gone
Fitness: I can walk further and longer without breathlessness
Mental health: Stronger, calmer, more confident
It worked — because I worked with my brain, not against it.
What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?
Every session begins with a conversation. We don’t focus on what’s going wrong — we focus on what’s already going right, what you want more of, and what your next small step looks like.
Then comes the trance. This is simply a deeply relaxed, natural state — something like daydreaming. You’re fully in control the entire time. As your body relaxes, your subconscious mind becomes more open and responsive.
In this relaxed state, I use carefully worded suggestions to help your brain:
Rehearse success
Strengthen motivation
Build healthier habits
Let go of old patterns
Your brain doesn’t fully distinguish between real and imagined experiences. So when we mentally rehearse change in trance, your brain starts wiring in those changes as if they’ve already happened. This is where real transformation begins.
Why Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss?
Weight loss hypnotherapy isn’t about willpower or restriction. It’s about understanding yourself and creating sustainable, enjoyable change.
Here’s what we focus on:
Setting clear, personal goals (not just weight targets)
Building positive habits rather than cutting everything out
Tackling issues like emotional eating, portion sizes, or motivation
Staying consistent by staying focused on what you want — not what you’re trying to avoid
And most importantly, we work one step at a time. You don’t need to overhaul your whole life overnight. Change works best when it’s gentle, positive, and personalised and as a gide, between eight and twelve sessions.
Final Thoughts
Losing weight can be challenging — but with the right approach, it’s absolutely possible. Whether you’re struggling with motivation, stuck in unhelpful eating patterns, or just unsure where to begin, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a path forward.
If you’re ready to stop battling with your habits and start building a new way of life, I’d love to support you.
Because I’ve seen this work — not just in my clients’ lives.
But in my own.
